The Well is more than water coming from a deep spring. It has historical perspective and profound importance. One has little trouble seeing Original Americans stopping by the hole in the earth, water gushing two meters straight up and folding over to run down the creek bed. It was not Cypress Creek back then, maybe not even when five ranches terminated in the middle of the Spring, and they drove wagons to the edge to fill large barrels with water to take back to the house. In a world of limestone, drilling for water was many years away, and it's no surprise to read a story of a wagon sliding backward into The Well and it taking teams of horses to pull it--and, one presumes, barrels and barrels of water--back out again.
